Surprise Inheritance from a deceased family member?

My husband and I received a letter indicating that his deceased mother's 401 K is still in effect and is payable to him. We've completed the steps necessary in order to receive the benefit. My question is how will this effect us tax wise? The amount is between 12 and 13K
