What was/is Proposition Eight?

I know I'm a little late and it's a stupid question, but can someone clarify some things on Prop 8 in California, what it was about, what it'd do, if it ped or not, if the voting for it isn't finished will it be likely to p or not?`Just an overall general idea of what it is.
